Player Ratings 2013/14 - Part Four: Attacking Midfielders/Wingers

Theo WALCOTT (RM/ST) - 14

25 years old - 13+5 apps / 6 goals (5 PL / 1 CL) 4 assists (PL)

What a frustrating season for Theo. It can’t be seen as anything other than a setback in his career, not because of his performances, but because of the serious injury that ruined it. Coming off the back of a brilliant campaign in 12/13, it seemed Theo was ready to establish himself as one of the best players at the club and in the league. But after a good start, injury disrupted his season. When he came back, it seemed he was ready to pick up where he’d left off, but disaster struck in January. In the 2-0 victory over Sp*rs, an innocuous challenge saw him leave the pitch on a stretcher. Despite that, no-one expected the news that he would miss the rest of the season and the World Cup with a torn knee ligament. With that, we lost our quickest player, a goal scorer and a right sided option. With the form he’d shown, it could’ve been a brilliant season for Theo, but he will now have to focus on rehab and getting back into the team as soon as possible for next season.

theo walcott spurs two nil

Season Rating - 5/10 (His performances were good, but the injuries meant it was a poor season for him on the whole)

Worst Moment - Arsenal 2-0 Sp*rs (FA Cup) - The injury towards the end of the game that ended his season was no doubt the low point of Theo’s campaign.

Best Moment - West Ham 1-3 Arsenal (PL) - A match winning performance which saw him score two vital goals after we’d gone 1-0 down.

World Cup? - Unfortunately no, the injury robbed him an almost certain place in the England squad for the competition.

Will he stay? - Yes, and for a good few years after too hopefully.

Alex Oxlade-CHAMBERLAIN (RW/MC) - 15

20 years old - 12+8 apps / 3 goals (2 PL / 1 FA Cup) / 4 assists (2 PL / 2 FA Cup)

Like Theo, a horribly frustrating season that was decimated by injury. Injured in the first half of the first game, Chamberlain was only able to return to action on January the 13th, having spent the best part of 5 months on the treatment table. When he came back, his performances were very good until his form declined, with the rest of the team, during March/April. Many thought it was Chamberlain’s time to shine, but the injury has set him back a bit. Despite that, he’s shown flashes of why he’s so highly rated and although questions remain about where his main position on the pitch should be, we undoubtedly have one of the league’s best young talents in our squad, to go with the likes of Wilshere and Ramsey.

the ox, alex oxlade-chamberlain

Season Rating - 5/10 (Similar to Theo, although his performances were more mixed)

Worst Moment - Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal (PL) - Chamberlain’s ill advised audition to be goalkeeper led to us going down to ten men and 3-0 down, in possibly the lowest point of our season.

Best Moment - Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool (FA Cup) - Some might argue his performance against Bayern was his best game, but for me, his goal and then assist for Podolski to beat Liverpool was a vital moment in our FA Cup run.

World Cup? - 90% yes. Selected in the 23 man squad, but has suffered an injury scare. It looks as though he will miss the first group game but be fit after.

Will he stay? - No doubt, one of the brightest young players in the league and he is ours.

Sorry this took a while, but as ever, life got in the way! The final part will be up as soon as possible.
