Player Ratings 2013/14 - Part Four: Attacking Midfielders/Wingers
After a lengthy break, here is the review for our Attacking Midfielders and the two right sided Wingers for 2013/14. Whilst we boast some of the best attacking talent in the league, 13/14 saw us struggle with injuries, in particular to pacey players like Walcott and Chamberlain. With the rumours circulating that Wenger has turned down the chance to re-sign Fabregas, but may look to bring Vela back to the club, it would appear that pace is a concern for the manager and it will be interesting to see which additions, if any, are made in that respect.
Mesut ÖZIL (AMC) - 11
25 years old - 37+3 apps / 7 goals (5 PL / 1 CL / 1 FA Cup) / 14 assists (9 PL / 2 CL / 3 FA Cup)
Undoubtedly the shock signing of the summer. Nobody expected a signing of such magnitude on the last day of the season, in fact, most of the gossip had been around Özil’s team mates Di Maria and Higuain. While we failed horribly in our attempts to sign a striker, in typically Wenger style, we splashed out £42.5mil on a player that some claimed we didn’t need. The transfer was met with jubilation though, as everyone agreed that Özil represented a world class addition.

Özil started brilliantly, with a hugely impressive debut against Sunderland and an exceptional performance against Napoli. However, doubts were raised as the season progressed and the rigours of English football began to take their toll on the German. His performances weren’t terrible, but because of the hype and the high transfer fee, nothing but stand out performances every week would be enough to satisfy fans and the media. He’s had his fair share of criticism, but I think Özil’s first season has been very good. Having had a season to adjust, I think Özil will be at his best next season.
Season Rating - 7/10
Worst Moment - Arsenal 0-2 Bayern (CL) - The infamous penalty miss right at the beginning of a huge CL tie will be something that lives with Özil for a long time.
Best Moment - Arsenal 2-0 Napoli (CL) - A stunning volley and a brilliant assist showed just what the man is capable of.
World Cup? - Yes, Özil will be a key player in Germany’s squad for Brazil.
Will he stay? - Yes. No question.
